.CA Domains

To register a .CA domain, the registrant must meet the Canadian Presence Requirements of the registry, CIRA. A new registrant must also accept CIRA’s registrant agreement by email within five days, or the registration is deleted.

Who can register a .CA domain?

The registrant must have a Canadian presence, such as being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, a corporation or other organization established in Canada, or the owner of a trademark registered in Canada. The .CA registration form asks for:

  • : how the registrant meets the Canadian Presence Requirements
  • : Yes or No

For a contact in Canada or the United States, the state or province is required.

How do I accept the CIRA registrant agreement?

When you register a .CA domain as a new registrant, the registration is put on hold until the registrant accepts the CIRA registrant agreement. The instructions are emailed to the registrant’s address by the registry, not by DNSimple. If you do not see the email, check your spam folder.

To accept, open the CIRA registrant agreement link, enter your contact ID, and click . The registration then completes.

Warning

If the agreement is not accepted within five days, CIRA deletes the domain. You can then register the same name again and repeat the process.

If you register another .CA domain with the same registrant information, you do not need to repeat this step. The domain is registered right away.

What else should I know about .CA domains?

  • Name servers: .CA domains need 2 to 6 name servers. If your name servers are hosts inside a .CA domain, such as ns1.example.ca and ns2.example.ca, each must have a different IP address.
  • Registrant changes: a change to the registrant’s name, organization, or email address is a registrant change that CIRA must confirm. Once requested, it cannot be canceled. CIRA cancels it automatically after one week if it is not confirmed.
  • WHOIS privacy: not available.
