To register a .US domain, the registrant must have a connection to the United States, called nexus: being a US citizen or permanent resident, a US organization, or a foreign organization with a real presence in the US. Transfers into DNSimple need the registrant’s approval by email.
Who can register a .US domain?
The .US registration form has two required fields:
- : what the domain will be used for. The options are business use for profit, education, government, non-profit (business, club, association, religious organization, and so on), and personal use.

: how the registrant meets the nexus requirement:
- C11: a natural person who is a United States citizen
- C12: a natural person who is a permanent resident of the United States or any of its possessions or territories
- C21: a US organization incorporated within one of the 50 states or a US territory
- C31: a foreign organization that regularly engages in lawful activities in the US
- C32: a foreign organization that has an office or other facility in the US
For C31 and C32, also give the two-letter country code of the registrant.
How do I transfer a .US domain to DNSimple?
Required acknowledgment
Every .US transfer into DNSimple needs the registrant’s explicit approval.
Approve a .US transfer
- After you start the transfer, look for the acknowledgment email. It goes to the domain registrant’s email address, which may be different from your DNSimple account email. Check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it.
- Click the link in the email to approve the transfer. No further steps are needed.
If you cannot read the registrant’s email address, update it at the domain’s current registrar before you start the transfer. Otherwise, the transfer will not succeed.
