Integrated DNS Providers let you manage DNS zones at other DNS providers from your DNSimple account. DNSimple supports Amazon Route 53, Azure DNS, and CoreDNS. After you connect a provider, you add, edit, and sync records at DNSimple and at the provider from the same Record Editor.
Why use Integrated DNS Providers?
- One place for zones at several providers. Organizations that serve DNS from more than one provider for redundancy can see and change every copy of a zone from DNSimple, instead of logging into each provider.
- Consistent records across providers. A sync copies a zone’s records from one provider to another, so the copies do not drift apart.
- DNS inside your own network. CoreDNS instances that you run on-premise load zones from DNSimple and serve them locally.
- A path for moving DNS to DNSimple. You can import zones from Route 53 or Azure DNS, then sync their records into DNSimple.
Integrated DNS Providers are available on all DNSimple plans. Connecting a provider requires Full Access to the DNSimple account.
How do Integrated DNS Providers work?
- Connect the provider once. You connect a provider from the page in your account settings. Route 53 and Azure DNS ask for API credentials. CoreDNS asks only for a nickname.
- Choose which zones to import. For Route 53 and Azure DNS, DNSimple lists the zones at the provider, and you select the ones to import. Imported zones appear on the Domain Names page.
- Manage records from the Record Editor. The Record Editor labels each record with the providers that have it. When you add, update, or delete a record, you choose which providers the change applies to.
- Sync when copies differ. A sync makes the destination zone match the source zone you pick. Records of a type the source provider does not support are left as they are at the destination.
- Add, remove, or delete zones. You can add a zone to a provider, remove an integrated zone from DNSimple while keeping it at the provider, or delete a zone at the provider.
URL records exist only at DNSimple. At Route 53 and Azure DNS, a URL record is written as an A record that points to the DNSimple redirector, so the redirect still runs through DNSimple.
